What is Sensory Processing?

Sensory processing is how your brain records, interprets, and uses information received from the sensory systems to behave systematically. Children who find it difficult to respond to the information that comes in through the senses suffer from Sensory Processing Disorder or Sensory Integration Disorder.

All of us are aware of the five senses, but the truth is you live in a world with more than five senses. Sensory processing can be divided into eight types:

  • Proprioception: Also known as kinesthesia is the ability to sense movement, action, and location of parts of your body. It helps you maintain your posture and motor control
  • Vestibular: It is a link between your inner ear and brain maintaining your control balance and eye movements.
  • Interoception: This sensory tells us about the internal state of your body. This can be both conscious as well as non-conscious.
  • Five senses: Lastly, these are the 5 common senses – touch, smell, taste, sight, and hearing.

What are the symptoms of sensory processing disorder?

Symptoms of a sensory processing disorder depend on the way a child processes sensations. Those who are easily stimulated may have hypersensitivity. While those aren’t easily stimulated, go through fewer sensations and have hyposensitivity. Till today, it is not clear what causes sensory disorders in children and if this disorder occurs on its own.

How can you cope up with sensory processing disorder?

There is no specific treatment for sensory disorders. But some professionals can help your child to face sensory challenges.

Some children may experience fewer with time while others learn to cope up with their experiences. Living with sensory processing disorder is hard. This disorder is said to have a drastic impact on a child’s everyday life. But, understanding the child’s reactions and triggers will help in coping.
