Brief History of OAP

The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) has been an instrumental force in supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families throughout the province of Ontario. Established in response to the growing need for specialized services, the OAP has undergone significant developments to meet the evolving requirements of the autism community.

The program's history can be traced back to 2005 when the Ontario government launched the Ontario Autism Initiative. This initiative aimed to enhance services for children with ASD by providing evidence-based interventions and reducing wait times for assessments and treatments.

In 2016, the Ontario government announced a transformation of autism services, culminating in the launch of the OAP in 2017. This new program was designed to offer a family-centered approach, recognizing that each child with autism has unique strengths and needs. It provided funding and support for a wide range of essential services, including applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and more.

Throughout its journey, the OAP has continued to evolve in response to feedback from the autism community and ongoing research in the field. The program has strived to increase accessibility, equity, and flexibility in service delivery, ensuring that children and youth with autism receive the most effective and appropriate interventions to support their development and overall well-being.

Who can get the support?

The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) offers vital support to children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Ontario. To determine eligibility for OAP benefits, certain criteria must be met.

At Kickstart Therapy, we strive to ensure families have a clear understanding of who can access these essential benefits. Eligibility is based on the following factors:

1. Age: Children and youth diagnosed with ASD under the age of 18 are eligible for OAP benefits.

2. Residency: The child or youth must be living in the province of Ontario.

3. Diagnosis: A qualified professional must diagnose the individual with autism spectrum disorder.

4. Needs-Based Assessment: A comprehensive needs-based assessment will be conducted to determine the child's specific requirements.

5. Meeting Clinical Criteria: The child must meet the clinical criteria for autism, as defined by the program.
