Studies found that 52 to 82 percent of children with ADHD have trouble with turn-taking, eye contact in a conversation, and introducing or expanding on topics for discussion.
Thus when it comes to the treatment of ADHD, speech and language therapy works effectively and is extremely beneficial.
The speech and language therapists perform an initial assessment that evaluates and identifies the type and severity of the difficulties experienced by children in their speech, communication, and language.
After the initial assessment, the therapists consult with the children’s parents or caregivers and implement individualized treatment plans tailored to the children’s specific needs and abilities.
Research states that children with ADHD are more likely to have the following communication disorders than in children without ADHD.
Social communication skills involve how we use our language skills in social situations. It also includes non-verbal communication, such as respecting personal space and making eye contact when speaking to someone. It further involves following the rules of conversation, such as not interrupting or talking over the top of people, staying on the same topic, or taking turns in conversations.
Children with ADHD have language difficulties in both oral and written language. They are more likely to stutter while talking. They repeat words, phrases, and sentences and pause more while talking with others.
Children with ADHD often develop vocal nodules. Vocal nodules are callous-like growth forming in the vocal folds from repetitive abuse or misuse of the voice. It results from yelling, talking excessively, crying, or making sound effects with voice. Children doing these behaviors have a hoarse-sounding voice and often lose their voice.
Speech therapists use a variety of interventions derived using a behavioral approach with positive reinforcement and structure for the individual. They further work closely with the educational staff and ensure that the individual reaches their potential in achieving their academic goals.
